All'interno del dibattito storiografico dell'ultimo ventennio si è utilizzato il concetto di guerra civile per descrivere la situazione creatasi nel sud Italia dopo l'Unità. La rivoluzione risorgimentale che ha portato alla formazione dello stato nazione italiano, secondo Salvatore Lupo, chiama direttamente in causa la guerra civile, combattuta nel meridione tra i sostenitori della patria italiana e i loro avversari. In questo contesto il fenomeno del brigantaggio diviene un momento integrante della lotta tra fautori e oppositori dell'Unità.Il richiamo alla guerra civile in relazione a questo periodo non è affatto nuovo. Infatti tra le letture del brigantaggio che emergono tra gli anni tra il 1861 e il 1866 vi è anche quella che lo accosta alla guerra civile. L'associazione si ritrova, con sfumature e prospettive diverse, nella pubblicistica di parte borbonica, in quella di parte nazional-italiana e negli scritti di autori stranieri. Inoltre nei documenti di natura giudiziaria che riguardano i fatti di brigantaggio avvenuti tra il 1860 e il 1861 si ritrova tra i capi di imputazione quello di aver suscitato/fomentato la guerra civile. Appare necessario, quindi, un esame degli scritti dei coevi al fenomeno, limitatamente a quelli in cui brigantaggio e guerra civile sono messi in relazione, per comprendere le ragioni che spinsero i contemporanei a rintracciare le caratteristiche della guerra civile nella situazione creatasi nel sud Italia all'indomani dell'Unità.
In the last two decades of historiographical debate the concept of civil war has been used to describe the situation that arose in southern Italy after the unification. The Risorgimental revolutionwhich led to the formation of the Italian nation-state, according to Salvatore Lupo, directly implicate the civil war fought in the south between the supporters of the Italian nation and their opponents. In this context, the phenomenon of brigandage becomes an important moment of the struggle between proponents and opponents of the Unification. The reference to the civil war in relation to this period is by no means new. In fact, among the interpretations of the brigandage that emerge in the years between 1861 and 1866 there is also the one who associate it with the civil war. The association is found, with different shades and perspectives, in publications of the borbonic side, in writings of Italian and foreign authors. Furthermore, in legal documents concerning the phenomenon of banditry between 1860 and 1861 it can be found, amongst the charges, brigandage seen as something which aroused/fomented the civil war. It seems necessary, therefore, an examination of the writings of the period, limited to those in which brigandage and civil war are related, in order to understand the reasons that led contemporaries to trace the characteristics of the civil war with the situation that arose in southern Italy following the Unification.
